Beyond Cuisine At The Wattle Cafe, Hurstbridge

A combination of entertainment that combines food, wine and storytelling in an uncomplicated yet satisfying fashion is the reason why ‘Beyond Cuisine’ performances, co-ordinated by actor and producer Suzanne Shubart, play to packed houses in the Wattle Cafe at Hurstbridge.

The format is simple: you sit at a cafe table having a drink while four actors read a selection of stories to you. Then you have a meal and chat about what you have heard. This post-performance part of the evening is certainly a factor in the formula’s success.

Due to popular demand Diamond Valley children have also been able to experience the joys of theatrical storytelling combined with food and discussion, at an adapted version of this popular Beyond Cuisine series.

Suzanne, who developed the series at Hurstbridge’s Wattle Cafe last year, was inundated with requests to expand the show into a children’s format. She has developed a one-hour show, for children aged seven to 11, that includes snacks and drinks and starts at 4pm. She says:

“We thought it’d be great to do a children’s show, because the actors really bring the characters to life and the kids would really love it…It’s a real theatrical sort of experience, because it’s not just based on the words on the page, it’s the way the actors breathe life into the story.”

Suzanne says an appealing aspect of Beyond Cuisine is the interaction between actors and audience members over a meal after the show.

“The actors choose the stories because it’s important they pick something they are crazy about…We are looking at authors Roald Dahl and Paul Jennings.”
