Warrandyte Community Garden
The shortest ‘food miles - the distance food travels from source to table - is clearly the fruit, vegetables, eggs you grow in your own backyard. Next best is locally grown, from an orchard shop, such as Auman’s for example.
A group of Warrandyte people addressed this issue with the establishment of the Warrandyte Community Garden in a disused police horse paddock. The garden was designed by local garden designer Bev Hanson.
The area contains 24 plots, is securely fenced, has a toolshed, a glasshouse and gazebo, and a cubbyhouse and sandpit for kids. A 10,000 litre tank was installed in 2007, fed from the roof of the new police station next door.
Plots are available to community members on payment of a modest joining fee and a small annual payment to help with ongoing costs.
NB It is anticipated there may be some plots available in time for the winter growing season. You can ring Julie Cottier for more info.
